Spotlight: Digital Broadcast: An Interview with Paul Gambaccini

Documentary-feature based around the life of American broadcaster Paul Gambaccini, with an in-depth interview seen from a screen inside a TV studio by two journalists. The film demonstrates the changes in broadcasting in 30 years to a full High Definition broadcast. Digital Broadcast was based on a 90 minutes interview the director had with Paul Gambaccini in 1999.

Initially intended for an interactive TV presentation it was first released on CD-ROM for Nick Peterson's MA in Interactive Multimedia. It was released on DVD in 2006.

Based on the full length version of 90 minutes: 10% (The presenter) of the film is in black and white 50% is in single colour (Blue, cyan, yellow, green, turquoise, orange and red) 40% is in full colour and HD.

“I've never been included in Paul's book the Guinness world of hit singles. Paul said to me once back in 1990 before we fell out again until 1994, that I have been extremely unlucky. I was never pushed as an artist and therefore always lacked the sales and recognition. I might have been. I was merely "used" as part of a general catalogue, in a music catalogue. Only 10 out of say a hundred artists will have the chance of making it. It has nothing to do with merit; if it had anyone would have and would win. They just randomly select the top 10.

I've found out much later that in music like in films you have "phases" and "periods". When it's hot, one has to live the life to the max. One has to work one's guts off and I did! By 1990 my musical career ended and I was not even an adult! I realised that the record sales were not so huge but that six of my songs became "supermarket music" around the world that is music on a playlist on cable stations.

I have sold millions in real terms but one cannot get platinum albums (or gold) by just being played four times or six times a day in supermarkets. One certainly does not get to receive any "noble recognition" and credibility; one is not a talented artist and one is not in Paul Gambaccini's book. I first met Paul when I first started in music when I was 14. We've fallen out a few times on trivial matters and are not currently in speaking terms. In 1999 we were very close friends and it is when I've interviewed him. As I have read and discovered a decade later: if you're not in his book, you're “nobody”: a failure, a ghost or a hoax. Art is valued in terms of sales and the highest the value, the highest the chances are that one will be allowed to the kingdom of heaven. Paul has been extremely candid in his 90 minutes interview; he has almost divulged his whole autobiography. It was more than appropriate for the King of Nobodies (a famous quote by someone in the media world), the poor student in showbiz to interview the professor of pop and the king of everybody”.

Between 2005-2008 various scenes containing nudity have been leaked by two assistant editors to various pornites and Youtube and Xrated sites. Many millions of hits resulted from this [we have the total amount and the screen shots of the ratings] we needed this for an audit as by 2007 we started legal proceedings to have the clips removed and be awarded payment accordingly. Some clips remain but the the proccedings are still ongoing.
Piracy triggered by major multinational owners of "these websites" means exactly the same as comitting murder. Especially when it is already so hard to break through the "iron curtain" of the mainstream media.
I have not been exactly pleased with some of the labelling that I have been branded with for these "infamous clips".
Anything taken out of context can damage and kill anyone and an entire production. Thanks Heavens I fought many more battles before and I have managed to create new films during this painful process. Yes I ended up endorsing some of the clips and the sites, merely because it eventually became part of the past and the history of the whole project.
I've moved on. It doesn't mean that I'm extatic about this, just past caring. But at the time it made many distributors nervous. (Not anymore)

About the casting:
The only person in the world who could have been the character of Paul X was Mark Joseph. I met 30 actors -not too many- but I knew he was the one who could have pulled the whole saga together.
Since I have only known him since 2002 he could not have featured in With a Mouse (to your Mouth) the last installment shot in 1997. (I do like to start by the end, at least I know how the end will be in advance). In this film I was Paul I couldn't find the right one then. It was OK: I do not appear for very long.
Was The Complete Map of the Universe autobiographical? It depends if the character is anything like me.
2006- Completed photography on Writing on the Wall
2007- First release of In and Out of Planet Earth on DVD. The censors in both the UK and in the U.S.
panicked over the Evolution scene and gave an 18 (UK) and R (U.S>) ratings
2008- The Est TV Show series 1-2-3 is available on DVD for the first time.
2010- Writing on the Wall passes the UK Culture Test with the highest score.
Est 2011- Writing on the Wall is released in the U.S. on download and DVD.
